Everyone knows
when you walk into a pharmacy or supplement shop,
you will see dozens and dozens of products promising
to make excess body fat melt away. The manufacturers
of these products are not allowed to make these
claims on the bottles but they run catchy ads on
television and in magazines. How is anyone ever
going to know whether the ingredients in these
products are safe or even effective?
Fat Burners and
weight loss supplements usually work in three ways:
1) Helping the body break down fat
This involves releasing it from fat cells, where it enters the bloodstream as free fatty acids that are then transported to muscle cells where they may be burned.
2) Using
supplements to suppress your appetite (complex
process)
No-one exactly knows how this method works, but what
we do know is that many hormones and
neurotransmitters are involved. Human's primary
instinct is to survive and once the appetite suppressants
are stopped people become hungry again.
3) Using Fat
Blockers to inhibit the absorption of fat during
digestion
Fat blockers don't work if a person isn't eating fat in his or her diet. They also won't
prevent weight gain if a person is overeating protein or carbohydrates. The negative side effects of these supplements include stomach discomfort, diarrhea, and inability to absorb many important fat-soluble vitamins and other nutrients. In addition, they may interfere with the effectiveness of certain medications, especially birth control pills and estrogen.
Once again, there is
no "magical" pill, or quick fix. Diet
Pills are a supplement and are to be used only as
that in conjunction with healthy eating, exercise
and common sense.
